DEFECT · BOX STICKERS
Funko Pop box sticker condition.
Stickers are part of the Surface subgrade — but a fake or peeling chase sticker can fail authentication entirely. Here's how graders score every sticker type, and the inspection checklist before submission.
Sticker types graders inspect
Convention exclusive (SDCC, NYCC, ECCC): authenticated against known production runs. Reproductions fail authentication. Authentication guide →
Chase variant marker: the glossy '1 in X' label. Critical for chase authentication.
Retailer exclusive (Target, Walmart, Hot Topic, FYE): color and pattern matched to retailer-specific designs.
Vaulted marker: presence/absence matched to vault status.
Convention pin / signature stickers: often added at events.
Sticker deduction scale
Perfect (flush, no fade, intact corners): 0 deduction.
Minor lift on one corner: Surface −0.5.
Visible fade or color drift: Surface −0.5 to −1.0.
Off-flush placement (factory error vs damage): Surface −0.5; factory errors disclosed don't deduct further.
Missing sticker on a Pop where it should be present: potential authentication failure for chase / convention variants.
Reproduction sticker: automatic authentication failure. Pop returns ungraded.
How to spot a reproduction sticker
1. Adhesive pattern. Original stickers have factory-applied even adhesive; reproductions show squeeze-out or uneven edges.
2. Color saturation. Compare against known authentic photos on hobbyDB or the convention's archive.
3. Font weight. Reproductions often use slightly different fonts than originals — print quality varies.
4. Sticker thickness. Originals are thinner; reproductions are slightly thicker.
When in doubt, run a free Popinspect pre-grade — our authentication module flags suspicious stickers before you spend $25 on a submission.
Can sticker damage be fixed?
Lifted corners: very carefully press flat — sometimes adheres without intervention. Don't apply glue.
Sticker residue: see shelf wear guide for the safe removal method.
Fade: not reversible.
Missing or fake stickers: don't add a replacement. Graders detect non-original stickers immediately and fail authentication.
FAQ · funko pop box sticker condition guide
Asked & answered.
How much does a damaged Funko Pop sticker lower the grade?
Surface −0.5 for minor lift or color fade. −1.0 for clearly visible damage. Missing sticker on a chase or convention Pop can fail authentication entirely, returning the Pop ungraded.
Can a reproduction sticker fail authentication on a Funko Pop?
Yes — all major 2026 graders (CGC, Beckett, SWAU, VVGS, PGS) detect reproduction stickers and fail authentication. The Pop is returned ungraded with no fee refund. Run a free Popinspect pre-grade first — our authentication module flags suspicious stickers before submission.
Should I fix a lifted Funko Pop sticker before grading?
Carefully press it flat — sometimes adheres without intervention. Never apply glue. Never replace a missing sticker with a fake. Graders detect non-original stickers and fail authentication.
Does the chase sticker affect the Funko Pop grade?
Yes — sticker integrity is part of the Surface subgrade. A perfect chase sticker scores full marks. A peeling, faded, or off-flush sticker drops Surface by 0.5-1.0. A missing chase sticker on a chase variant fails authentication.
Is Popinspect an official grader?
No. We are pre-grade intelligence — we predict what CGC, Beckett, SWAU, VVGS, or PGS are likely to grade your Pop. The official grade still comes from them. We just make sure you only ship the ones worth shipping. See our 47-point rubric →
